Wednesday, January 11, 2012 - The Refton Volunteers recently received word from the Pennsylvania State Fire Commissioners Office that they were awarded the Grant that they applied for last fall. For the 2011 Grant, the Volunteers decided to go for Laptop Computers for RescueEngine 5-9-1 and Engine 5-9-2 along with getting monitors set up in the Apparatus Bay to view the County WebCAD and for the IamResponding Program. The benefits to having laptops in the apparatus include (but not limited to) having all preplan information computerized. Fire Companies in the past would have large, bulky notebooks in the apparatus that would give important information about commercial, industrial businesses, landmarks, watersources, etc which takes up a lot of room and take valuable time to thumb through for the information. Having it all computerized while using the mapping software will allow officers to find the information faster and map out the closest resources in order to be a lot more efficient on the scene of an incident. Also with this newer technology, the incident will be automatically preloaded to the computer. When the apparatus is ready to respond, a lot of initial important information will already be preloaded, which again will make the response to assist the community more efficient.
The benefits of having monitors in the station that will display the County's WebCAD along with the IamResponding Program will allow the first arriving responders to the station to take a preliminary look at the incident description and will be able to see how many firefighters are currently responding to the station to ensure that the apparatus responds with the highest trained, most qualified individuals. Again, will help make the Refton Volunteers more efficient.
We hope to have this new technology in service by late winter/early spring of 2012. Special thanks to Grant Training Resources for helping us secure this important Grant.
