Wednesday, March 12, 2014 - Recently the Refton Volunteers were awarded the Pennsylvania State Fire Commissioners Grant for an All-Terrain Side-By-Side Vehicle that will be a huge asset to the department as well as the community.

As a very large portion of our first due district is fields, wildland, woods and many miles of the Enola Low Grade Rail Trail, it makes for some challenging times on occasion when we get dispatched to an emergency that involves going back trails, dirt roads and fields.  Even though the Refton Volunteers are fortunate to have a fleet that is mostly four wheel drive, there are times when the areas are extremely tight and cumbersome to navigate these vehicles through.  This is where the side-by-side will provide the perfect solution.

The side-by-side will be a Polaris Ranger with seating for five, four wheel drive, have a utility bed, a winch, roll cage, tool rack, upgraded bumpers and some other essential equipment.  Future plans for the side-by-side include building a skid unit with pump, handlines and other equipment for wildland fires along with an area to mount a stokes basket for environmental emergencies.

This project has been something that the Refton Volunteers have been pondering for several years and finally had the perfect opportunity to move forward with this grant opportunity.  We would like to thank the PA State Fire Commissioners Office for awarding us this grant and the Refton Volunteers for their hard work in training and certification so we would have the opportunity to apply for this grant.

The Refton Volunteers are hoping to have "Special Unit 59" in service by mid to late Spring of 2014.
