Highlights from a Fall Semester of Essentials

Monday, December 31, 2012 - This fall, several of the Probationary Firefighters at Company 59 started their Firefighting Education by enrolling in the 180 plus hour series of Firefighting Module Classes (or 'Mods' for short) hosted by Willow Street Fire Company and Quarryville Fire Company.  There are a total of Four Module Classes; three of which were complete late summer/early fall of 2012.  The fourth and final module class will commence late winter/early spring of 2013.

Within these classes, the students learn numerous skills such as (but no where limited to) hose line operations, ladders, forcible entry, search and rescue, generator operations, ropes and knots, how to safely operate on the fireground, basic first aid, CPR and AED, Hazardous Materials Operations along with countless other skills not mentioned.  More info on this series of classes can be found at www.wsfc512.com.

This is only the beginning of the massive amount of training a firefighter needs (no matter if they are career or volunteer).  For a person fresh off the street, there are hundreds of hours of training in many different subject areas to gain only basic knowledge of what is needed to perform Firefighting Operations, Vehicle Rescue Operations, Medical Assistance, Hazardous Materials Operations as well as other areas.

Congratulations to the probationary volunteers on your current success through the journey and we look forward to seeing you all grow into proficient, progressive firefighters.
