Company adds more Firefighter 1's to it's staff
Oct 22, 2012 - 2:47:41 PM

Monday, October 22, 2012 - This past week the many of the Refton Volunteers completed a very long road spanning many years.  This past Tuesday evening, twelve of the Refton Volunteers completed the written portion of the PA State Firefighter 1 Certification and completed the practical portion yesterday at the Lancaster County Public Safety Training Center.

This Certification is not easily obtained.  Each candidate has successfully complete well over 200 hours of training in a wide variety of topics including (but not limited to) Firefighting and related operations, Vehicle Rescue, Hazardous Materials, First Aid and CPR and the National Incident Management System (NIMS).  This certification is recognized across the state and nationally as putting firefighters at a level playing field in a basic knowledge of the trade.  There are many different State and National Certifications that a firefighter can go after in many different areas.  However, they must have the Firefighter 1 Certification in order to pursue the rest.

Each firefighter that successfully obtains this certification also helps out their respective fire department when grant opportunities for the respective department are presented.  Certain grant opportunities require a certain percentage of the active staff be certified to even be ellagible to apply for the respective grant.

All of the Refton Volunteers that pursued this testing should be proud of yourself for your achievements.  This is just the beginning of your certification journey.
