On Oct. 22, Matt Hess, an alumnus of the Garden Spot FFA chapter at Lampeter-Strasburg High School, received his American FFA Degree at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis. The American FFA Degree is the highest degree an FFA member can receive.

Hess is the son of Dale and Rosemary Hess of New Providence. He works with his father on their farm growing tobacco, corn, soybeans and wheat, and he sells seeds.

To achieve an American FFA Degree, an FFA member must meet certain requirements, such as earning and productively investing $7,500 through a supervised agricultural experience (SAE) program; owning or holding a professional position in an existing agricultural enterprise; and serving 50 community service hours. Recipients must also demonstrate leadership abilities and community involvement.

Hess, who has been involved with FFA over the past six years, plans to continue helping with his FFA chapter.
